CRPF on UN Mission
Sri Lanka Mission-The CRPF’s responsibilities and services have also extended outside the borders of the country. The CRPF’s contributions to the IPKF in Sri Lanka, the UN Peacekeeping Force in Namibia, Somalia, Haiti, the Maldives, and Bosnia, and Herzegovina speak volumes about the Force’s ability to adapt to any combat situation anywhere in the world. A contingent of 240 Royal Air Force soldiers is now stationed in Kosovo as part of the UN Mission in Kosovo, where they are responsible for providing security and protection to UN officials, UN civil police, and crowd control, among other things. In addition, RAF coys will assist local police in controlling crowds during violent demonstrations, offer humanitarian supplies, and support the ICTY’s operations.
Haiti Mission-The National Council of Government, commanded by Jean Claude Duvalier, was in charge of Haiti in 1986. The country went through a period of political turmoil from 1986 to 1991 as it transitioned from one military regime to another. The force’s activities included mobile patrolling, saturation patrolling, staffing and guarding of Police Stations and the National Prison, combined mounted/dismounted patrols, Prison monitor teams, and security escorts. They also provided training to the detainees. All of these commitments were fulfilled as part of a special agreement to ensure that Haiti’s presidential elections were held in a peaceful manner.
Liberia Mission- On a special request from the United Nations and under the direction of the Government of India/Ministry of Home Affairs, a fully formed Female Police Unit (FFPU) was formed with Mahila CRPF personnel and later deployed in Liberia in February 2007 as part of a UN peacekeeping force in the strife-torn African nation. Among the 23 nations stationed there, only India has an all-female police force, and it was the first all-female police force deployed by any UN peacekeeping mission. As part of the UN mission, this deployment is still underway, although it now includes a male contingent as well. A one-year contract is in place for each contingency.
