ISI History

On January 6, 1947, the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established with the goal of managing the Certification Marks scheme and improving consumer safety. ISI was based on a memorandum written by the Institution of Engineers for the Department of Industries and Supplies on September 3, 1946. (India). This occurred prior to a meeting of 25 countries in London on October 14, 1946, at which India was a founding member and the only “developing” country, and which decided to establish the International Organization for Standardisation with the goal of facilitating international coordination and unification of industrial standards.

bisThe Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act was passed by Parliament on March 21, 1952, authorizing the institution to certify standards. As companies and producers began to embrace and declare their devotion to the “ISI Mark” as a virtue, the mark and the quality it recognized became household names. There remained, however, a void in the development of standards.

Standardization, certification, and testing were established on April 1, 1987, for the “harmonious development of activities of standardization, marking, and quality certification” in order to supply trustworthy quality goods and eliminate health risks through standardization, certification, and testing. The BIS took over all of the ISI’s duties and began setting standards, certifying products, registering trademarks, and granting patents. One of the law’s faults was the lack of exact processes for certifying precious metals and jewellery.

In the case of gold, the BIS Act of 1986 only applied to producers, whereas the seller was also obliged to be confirmed. It was necessary to include an enabling provision as a result of this. The BIS Act of 1986 was abolished as a result of these changes, and the BIS Act of 2016 entered effect on March 21, 2016. If a product fails to fulfill the criteria, consumers will be paid under the new rule. It also permits enterprises to self-certify their adherence to standards, which can result in fines and prison sentences of up to two years if they are not followed.

Characteristics of a Fake ISI Mark

There are a number of fake ISI-labeled items on the market. They use ISI labels to identify products without certifying them. As a result, choosing items should be approached with caution. The absence of a requisite seven-digit license number on the ISI mark is another telltale sign of a fake ISI label. The number of Indian standards that apply to the product is indicated by an IS number at the top of the ISI label.
