NTPC is India’s largest energy company, created in 1975 to assist India’s power growth. It has since established itself as the major power corporation, with a presence across the whole value chain of power generation. It has transitioned away from fossil fuels and currently uses hydro, nuclear, and renewable energy sources to create electricity. NTPC is in charge of major exams.

By cutting greenhouse gas emissions, this excursion will assist the corporation in reducing its carbon footprint. The company has expanded into consulting, power trading, power professional training, rural electrification, ash utilization, and coal mining to support its primary business.

In May 2010, NTPC was designated as a Maharatna business. There are ten Maharatnas CPSEs in India as of January 2020. In the Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company rankings, NTPC is placed as the No. 2 Independent Power Producer (IPP).

History- NTPC

  • On November 7, 1975, it was incorporated as a power-generating corporation.
  • Shri. D.V Kapur became the company’s first Chairman and Managing Director on March 19, 1976.
  • On December 8, 1976, the government approved NTPC’s first project, a thermal power plant in Singrauli, Uttar Pradesh.
  • In 1997, it was designated as a Navratna enterprise.
  • It was renamed ‘NTPC Limited’ in 2005 after becoming a publicly traded firm in 2004.
  • In 2006, it signed a deal with Sri Lanka to build two 250 MW units in Trincomalee.
  • In May 2010, it was designated as a Maharatna enterprise.

Criticism- NTPC

Land acquisition in tribal areas: The Central Government and several state governments have allocated land to the business (and other PSUs in India) for the construction of power plants and related infrastructure in rural/tribal areas across the country. Land Acquisition Acts issued by the Central and State Governments have granted some of these lands to NTPC (and other PSUs in India).

Wherever a land purchase law is implemented, it also imposes a responsibility on PSUs/governments to take steps to properly rehabilitate displaced rural/tribal residents. Governments/PSUs are chastised if they fail to meet their obligations to displaced residents. Local populations oppose coercive land acquisition in many regions when land acquisition laws are proposed because they are unsure of proper rehabilitation.

Future growth: With the commissioning of several coal-based power plants that are now under construction, India will not require additional coal-fired power plants until 2027, according to the Draft National Electricity Plan, 2016 prepared by the Government of India. India no longer suffers recurrent power shortages, forcing power providers to purchase electricity at exorbitant prices, resulting in increased profit margins for them.

NTPC was previously able to sell its power at higher margins on deployed capital and higher overhead costs because of secured power purchase agreements (PPA) from state-owned disComs. Furthermore, its primary skill in generating electricity from coal-fired power plants is becoming obsolete in terms of technology and economics in the face of non-conventional power generation such as wind, solar, and other renewables.

In the future, in order to achieve satisfactory growth primarily from wind and solar power projects, NTPC will be willing to slash all of its additional profit margins on capital spending in order to bring down the power sale price to parity with IPPs and secure projects through open competitive bidding.

National Tractor Pulling Championships– The Northwestern Ohio Tractor Pullers Association (NWOTPA), which is the championships’ backbone, promotes the NTPC. The NWOTPA was founded in the spring of 1962 as the Wood County Tractor Pullers. There were about 20 members, all of whom were Wood County, Ohio locals. The first-speed pull was held at the Wood County Fairgrounds in August of 1962. A special long flat-bottomed sled was constructed for men to step on as it passed past.

On both sides of the track, men lined up and stepped onto the sled as it passed. The tractor with the longest pull was proclaimed the winner. Many issues arose as a result of this form of pulling, including men fleeing the track during the event and tractors moving too quickly for men to step on. As automobiles became more complex, so did the rules and regulations that governed them. As separate sanctioning bodies, the NTPC has partnered with the National Tractor Pullers Association, TNT Motorsports, and the United States Hot Rod Association.

These organizations not only guarantee a level playing field for racers but also enforce safety laws to safeguard both drivers and spectators. All aspects of the yearly event are completely under the control of the membership, including lighting and electricity, track construction and maintenance, sponsorship procurement, advertising, food service, media relations, security, ticket sales, and so on.
