More Information about PTP

The International Imaging Industry Association developed the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) to allow the transfer of images from digital cameras to computers and other peripheral devices without the use of additional device drivers. ISO 15740 was used to standardise the protocol. The USB Implementers Forum has standardised it as the still image capture device class for USB. PTP devices use USB as their default network transmission medium.

As a digital camera connection protocol, USB PTP is a popular alternative to the USB mass-storage device class (USB MSC). Both modes are supported by some cameras. PTP defines a method for producing, transferring, and manipulating objects, most commonly photographic images such as JPEG files. While the objects handled by PTP are commonly thought of as files, they are abstract entities identified merely by a 32-bit object ID. These objects, on the other hand, can have parents and siblings, allowing for a file-system-like view of the device’s contents.

History of PTP

Digital camera companies used multiple proprietary protocols for managing digital cameras and sending photos to PCs and other host devices until PTP was standardised. At a time when most cameras required the use of Microsoft Windows or Mac OS device drivers to transfer their pictures to a computer, Steve Mann coined the term “Picture Transfer Protocol” and the acronym “PTP” to summarise work on the creation of a Linux-friendly way of transferring pictures to and from home-made wearable computers. PTP was established by the IT10 group and was first standardised as PIMA 15470 in 2000. Eastman Kodak Company’s Tim Looney and Tim Whitcher, as well as Eran Steinberg, were major contributors to the standard (Fotonation).

PTP- Storage & Extension

PTP is a communication protocol and does not offer a method for storing items. It also doesn’t mention a transit layer. It is, however, designed to support current standards like Exif, TIFF/EP, DCF, and DPOF, and is often used via the USB and FireWire transport layers.

Digital camera images are often saved as files on a mass storage medium, such as a memory card, that is formatted with a file system, most commonly FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32, and maybe set up according to the Design rule for Camera File system (DCF) specification. However, because PTP abstracts from the underlying representation, none of these are required. When a camera is connected to a computer through USB MSC, the physical file system and layout are visible to the user.

PTP has been extended by the development of a number of protocols. PTP/IP, which was created by FotoNation and was first used in a series of Wi-Fi digital cameras from Nikon, Canon, and Eastman Kodak, allows data to be transferred over any IP-based network. Microsoft’s Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) lets users to transmit files over wireless or wired networks, based in part on FotoNation’s PTP/IP, but also allows users to transfer other types of media, as well as labeling objects with additional metadata (such as title, artist and similar).

Advantage of PTP

  • Allows platform and operating system developers to integrate PTP natively into their systems, eliminating the requirement for user-installed digital camera drivers.
  • Allows camera manufacturers to use the same protocol to support various transports.
  • Allows third-party developers to simply and uniformly interface with digital cameras.
  • Support for a restricted number of structures is required, although many optional features are available.
  • Allows companies to add proprietary commands and features to the protocol.

Some Other Terms, Definitions, and PTP Full Forms

Below mentioned is the list of some other important and useful PTP full forms that are essential to know.

Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases– Protein tyrosine phosphatases are enzymes that remove phosphate groups from proteins’ phosphorylated tyrosine residues. Phosphorylation of the tyrosine (pTyr) residue in proteins can result in novel recognition patterns for protein interactions and cellular localisation, as well as alter protein stability and modulate enzyme performance. As a result, maintaining a proper degree of protein tyrosine phosphorylation is critical for a variety of cellular processes.

Tyrosine-specific protein phosphatases (PTPase; EC 3.1.3.48) use a cysteinyl-phosphate enzyme intermediate to remove a phosphate group linked to a tyrosine residue. These enzymes are critical regulators of cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, transformation, and synaptic plasticity. They are found in signal transduction pathways (such as the MAP kinase pathway) and cell cycle control.

Point To Point– A point-to-point connection is a communication link between two nodes or communication endpoints. A telephone call is an example of this, in which two phones are connected and what one caller says can only be heard by the other. A point-to-multipoint or broadcast link, on the other hand, allows several nodes to receive information sent by a single node. Leased lines and microwave radio relays are further types of point-to-point communications networks.

In computer networking and computer architecture, the phrase also refers to a cable or other connection that connects only two computers or circuits, as a contrast to other network topologies like buses or crossbar switches, which can connect a large number of communications devices. P2P is an abbreviation for point-to-point. This usage of P2P is separate from P2P, which refers to peer-to-peer file sharing networks or other peer-to-peer data-sharing protocols.

Peer To Peer– P2P computing, often known as peer-to-peer networking, is a distributed application architecture that divides jobs or workloads among peers. Peers are equal-opportunity, equally capable participants in the application. They are supposed to build a node network that is peer-to-peer. Without the requirement for central coordination by servers or reliable hosts, peers make a portion of their resources, such as processing power, disc storage, or network bandwidth, directly available to other network participants.

Peers are both resource suppliers and consumers, in contrast to the typical client-server model, which divides resource consumption and supply. While P2P systems have previously been utilised in a variety of application domains, the file-sharing system Napster, which was first deployed in 1999, popularised the design. In many fields of human interaction, the principle has inspired new structures and philosophies. Peer-to-peer as a meme refers to the egalitarian social networking that has evolved throughout society, facilitated by Internet technology in general, in such social contexts.

Parallel Track Path– Parallel Track Path (PTP) is an abbreviation for a technique for data organising on two layer DVD discs. On a dual-layer DVD, using the Parallel Track Path (PTP) rather than the OTP (Opposite Track Path), both layers have a Lead-in and Lead-out section as part of the information space. The Lead-in region of each layer is positioned at the disc’s inner radius, while the Lead-out area is located at the disc’s outer radius.

The structure of this layout is similar to that of a Compact Disc. For both information layers, data is read from the inner radius of the disc to the outside radius, as with a CD. For example, the PTP approach can be used to provide artist profiles and other background information in one track while playing a movie in the other, or to create quick-responding game structures by moving from layer to layer quickly.

Post-Tetanic Potentiation– PTP is a short-lived kind of synaptic plasticity that causes an increase in the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic potentials (mEPSPs) or currents (EPSCs) but has no effect on the amplitude of the spontaneous postsynaptic potential. Potentiation normally lasts several minutes (shorter potentiations are referred to as augmentations). When synapses are activated with repeating (tetanic) pulses delivered in lengthy trains at high frequencies, PTPs are detected (10 Hz to 200 Hz stimuli applied for .2 seconds to 5 seconds).

PTPs are considered to be caused by an increase in calcium concentration in the presynaptic neuron’s axon terminal during the stimulus train. However, because alterations that stay this long outlast the pace at which calcium is carried out of the presynaptic neuron, this is a contentious matter. Following a tetanic stimulation, depression might occur instead of potentiation in rare circumstances.

Peak To Peak– As seen below, peak-to-peak (pk-pk) is the difference between a waveform’s maximum positive and negative amplitudes. When an alternating current ( AC ) wave has no direct current ( DC ) component, the pk-pk amplitude is double the peak amplitude.

Programming the PsychoDrill– PTP (Programming the PsychoDrill) was a short-lived side project of Wax Trax Records’ best and brightest. “Show Me Your Spine,” the first PTP track, was recorded in 1986. It was the first time Jourgensen, Paul Barker, and Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy collaborated on a project. The song was featured in a bar scene in the first RoboCop film (1987), however, it was not included on the album. The song was not released commercially until 2004 when it was included in Ministry’s Side Trax compilation. It features arpeggio melodies, loud drumming, sampled orchestral hits, and Ogre’s harshly distorted vocals, and is reminiscent of the early Wax Trax sound.
