The SSC was established on 4 November 1975 when the Government of India constituted a commission called Subordinate Service Commission. In September 1977, the name was renamed to Staff Selection Commission. The Staff Selection Commission is one of the major bodies that come under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) which consists of a Chairman, two Members, and a Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations.
